Science Fiction - Word Count 1926
OF A RARE BIRD
Author... ...R. D. Peters
He was hard to figure, the old paleontologist. But Everett Engel was regarded as a master within his field. It was seldom he attended the many functions of which he was invited by associates who knew him through his many published works and fascinating finds. At age sixty, he was considered a standard, and his works were revered as definitive when they related to the many subjects within his literary works, published by several monthly magazines. To the majority of the public, his was dry reading, but to those who unearthed the secrets of past life forms, Engel's was a pathfinder. Yet, after many years of invitation, it was a rare and seldom thing for the elder of such orders, to attend a function.
That was what made Engel's call to a museum director and organizer of his profession's social elite, ecstatic at the privileged request of bringing together a group, for what was described as an unveiling of Engel's greatest find.
The director, a Mr. Talent, did as Engel requested, and in the span of a month, arranged for the meeting within his museum. It would be an after hours setting, closed to the public. The locked door event would make the honor of Engel's ascension from his murky and nebulous world of mysterious reclusiveness, seem even more of the privilege. The director felt assured that Engel was to uncover some unknown relic, or monumental bit of knowledge within the walls of his very indenture. COPYRIGHTED |
